Apeel of chemical-free labels

Label Apeel managing director Stuart Kellock

Leicester-based self-adhesive label manufacturer, Label Apeel said it has become one of the fisrt label printers in the UK to become benzophenone-free. The company supplies many of large UK food industry names and is accredited to BRC/IoP Food Packing Global Standard. It has been using low migration inks successfully since November. Retail multiples are demanding suppliers confirm  the exclusion of potentially harmful chemicals, such as IV light blocking benzophenone from their stocks.

The move involved a full audit of the ink store. Label Apeel managing director Stuart Kellock said he had been concerned about the chemical issue for some time and used ink supplier Paragon Inks’ low migration range of inks, which do not contain potentially harmful chemicals that could migrate from packaging into the product.

He said, “We are pleased to be ahead of the game on this issue as we have a duty to our customers and theirs to provide the safest, environmentally viable label solutions to enhance products. Paragon Inks,  our supplier had been very quick  to develop this new range of low migration inks, which have eradicated the potentially harmful chemicals without reducing product performance.”
